Building to serve

Summary of Proposals

The aim of this proposed development is a welcoming, warm & family friendly church building, with the flexibility for community use. See the artist's impressions below for our ideas.

One of the top priorities is improved heating, which will take the form of gas –fired under floor heating to give background heat at all times and radiators to boost heat in different areas when needed. A porch with glass doors will reduce draughts.

The floor will be level throughout the church so that it is accessible for wheelchairs and buggies and all of the basic infrastructure, like lighting, sound system etc, will be updated to modern expectations. In the chancel, the front choir stalls will be replaced with seating which faces the altar, to create a beautiful chapel.

The tower area will be extended and modified to contain toilets, a kitchen and, in a new upstairs room, which can provide office or storage space. A new room will also be created in the south west corner which will enable development of the current Vicar’s vestry and choir vestry, whilst not disrupting the beauty of the church, including the Millennium window. This new area will provide rooms that can be used for junior church and other meetings and will also improve the space available for vergers and flower arrangers.

When under floor heating is installed, the floor will be levelled and so whatever seating we use in future will be free standing, rather than fixed to wooden plinths as it is now. We could re-instate most of the pews, suitably modified to make them free standing and stable. Alternatively, we could replace some or all of them with new pews, benches or chairs, which would be more flexible. They would be made by modern craftsmen and would still include space to kneel for prayer.

We have many stages to go through before we make these changes and so it will be several years before they actually happen. We are absolutely clear that nothing we do will adversely affect the overall beauty and impact of the building. Please, therefore, take this opportunity to give us your views by e:mailing vicar@stmarysburwell.ord.uk Thank you!
